Scarborough fair

The coastal path drops you straight into this 22-hectare slice of Yorkshire coastline, where the North Sea crashes against limestone cliffs and the air smells of salt and wild thyme. Scarborough Fair Nature Reserve sits just south of the town proper, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick snap for Instagram.

You're looking at chalk grassland that slopes down towards the shore, threading through stands of hawthorn and gorse. The walking's easy enough - no scrambling required - and the views back towards Scarborough's seafront are genuinely good, especially when the light hits the bay just right. Spring and early summer are prime time: skylarks overhead, cowslips dotting the turf, the whole place suddenly humming with life.

It works best for walkers and anyone into coastal ecology. Kids will manage it fine if they're the type to poke about in rockpools and look for birds rather than need constant entertainment. A hour's decent walk covers the best bits, though you could easily spend longer if you're stopping to sketch or photograph.

The reserve runs free, which is brilliant, and there's decent parking nearby. It slots perfectly into a seaside holiday if you're based at Scarborough Camping and Caravanning Club or Prospect House Farm Glamping just up the coast - gives you something proper to do when the beach gets crowded. Not dramatic or showy, but genuinely worth the detour if you're already in the area.
