Savin Hill

The walk up Savin Hill takes you straight into proper Lake District fell territory without the crowds you'd battle on Catbells or Skiddaw. It's a relatively modest peak by Cumbrian standards, but that's rather the point - you get genuine mountain air and views across the valleys without spending half your holiday queuing at car parks.

From Kendal, it's barely twenty minutes to the trailhead. The ascent itself is straightforward enough, rising through bracken and rough grass with the landscape opening up as you gain height. On a clear day you're looking across to the Pennines and down into the valleys that feed Windermere. It's the kind of walk that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Lakeland Glamping or Damson View are close enough that you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the afternoon for other plans.

Really, this suits walkers after a proper hike without the alpine drama. Families with younger legs might find it a touch dull compared to the more distinctive peaks nearby, but it's excellent training ground if you're building up to something steeper. Allow two to three hours up and down, depending on how often you stop to catch your breath and take photographs.

The fell is free to access - there's no visitor centre or facilities, just open countryside. Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site is nearby if you fancy a longer stay in the area and want to explore the broader park landscape. Go on a weekday morning if you can. The peace makes all the difference.
