Whitbarrow - Forestry England

A proper woodland walk in the heart of Cumbria, Whitbarrow is a Forestry England site just outside Kendal that most Lake District visitors completely miss. The forest itself isn't spectacular - it's managed woodland, not wild fell - but the walking here is genuinely good, with several well-maintained trails threading through mixed trees and opening onto surprisingly decent views across the valleys.

What you get is a straightforward country day out. Families can tackle the easier loops in under an hour, while walkers after a proper trek can easily spend half a day here. The paths are mostly firm underfoot even when damp, which is the big advantage over some of the rougher fell walks nearby. There's a car park at the entrance and facilities are basic but adequate.

The honest truth? It's not going to blow your mind. The views from higher points are pleasant rather than dramatic, and you won't see the famous Windermere panoramas you get elsewhere. What it does offer is peace and a decent walk without fighting crowds. Perfect for a rainy afternoon when the Lakeland peaks are shrouded in cloud, or if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Lakeland Glamping or Hill of Oaks are close by - and want something low-key on the rest day.

Costs and opening hours aren't advertised online, so ring ahead or check at Kendal visitor centre. Access is free to walk the trails, though there may be a small car park charge. Allow two to three hours for the full circuit. It's worth the detour only if you're staying locally and need a leg-stretch, not if you're driving over specially.
