Sandy Gate Pike

The walk up Sandy Gate Pike from near Skipton is bracing rather than brutal - about an hour's climb if you're moving at a sensible pace. The fell sits in that sweet spot where the views properly open up without requiring a technical scramble or a full day's commitment.

What you get at the top is the whole Wharfedale spread laid out below you. On a clear day the visibility is genuinely excellent, and you can trace the river's path right down towards Skipton itself. The limestone landscape changes as you climb - moorland at the bottom, then that distinctive gritstone terrain. It's the sort of view that makes the ascent feel worthwhile rather than just ticking a box.

This one suits walkers who want exercise without drama. Families with older kids will manage it fine in decent weather. Expect it to take a good three hours round trip if you're not racing. The ground can be boggy after rain, so gaiters aren't a bad idea.

Stay at Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Wood Nook just outside Skipton and you're perfectly placed for this walk plus a day exploring Skipton itself - the market's worth an hour, the high street has proper shops rather than charity outlets. Both campsites are rated exceptionally well. Pop the walk in as part of a longer stay rather than a one-off detour.
