The walking routes around them are flat and manageable, which means families with younger kids won't hit a wall of complaints halfway round.

What makes it work is the birdwatching. Bring binoculars and a patience for spotting grebes, herons, and whatever else has decided to settle that morning. The lakes are genuinely good for this - you'll see twitchers here with serious kit. There's also a visitor centre (worth checking opening hours locally) and designated viewing areas that don't require you to scramble through undergrowth.
