Brereton Pool

The water here is surprisingly clear for a former mining site. Brereton Pool sits just outside Sandbach in Cheshire, a proper working landscape where industry once chewed up the ground and nature has quietly reclaimed it. What you get now is a lake fringed with birch and willow, good for a solid walk round - takes about forty minutes at a proper pace - and genuinely decent for spotting waterfowl. It's free to access and there's enough of a path to feel like you've done something without needing peak fitness. The water itself isn't for swimming, mind you. This is a nature reserve with a working quarry at one end, so it's got that honest, unglamorous charm rather than anything Instagram-friendly. Birdwatchers get real value here - the diversity is surprising for somewhere so industrial. Families with young kids will manage the walk fine, though there's not much in the way of amenities or play equipment.

If you're camping at Yellowstone or Woodlands Park nearby, Brereton makes an easy morning detour. Don't expect dramatic views or manicured gardens. What you get instead is a genuine slice of working Cheshire - the kind of place where you notice things because you're actually paying attention. Best visited early or late to avoid the local dog walkers, though honestly they're part of the character. The nearby Sandbach Crosses are worth pairing it with if you want to add a historical element to your day.
