Rode Hall

Rode Hall sits just outside Sandbach, a proper Georgian country house that's been in the same family for centuries. The main draw here is the house itself - all elegant proportions and period detail inside - plus the grounds, which include walled gardens and woodland walks that take a good couple of hours to do properly.

It's the sort of place history buffs will genuinely enjoy, especially if you're into how wealthy families actually lived rather than just gawping at grand staircases. The gardens are well-maintained without feeling sterile, and there's enough space that you won't feel cramped even on busy days. Families with older kids get more from it than toddlers - under-fives will tire of the house fairly quickly, though the grounds offer a bit more freedom to roam.

You'll want to check opening hours and admission prices before you go, as these aren't fixed year-round. Allow three to four hours if you're doing both house and gardens properly. It's an easy detour if you're based at one of the excellent camping spots nearby - Castle Camping is barely twenty minutes away, as is Yellowstone - so you could easily slot it into a broader Cheshire and Staffordshire exploration.

The location between Sandbach and the Potteries makes it well-placed for a weekend combining stately home visits with the wider region. Worth the visit if you're into that world; less compelling if you're after something more active.
