The Lovell Quinta Arboretum sits just outside Sandbach and is essentially a working collection of trees and woodland that feels more like someone's labour of love than a polished tourist attraction. You're walking through genuinely interesting plantings - specimen trees, native woodland, the sort of thing that appeals to serious gardeners and tree enthusiasts far more than casual visitors looking for a quick stroll.

It's free to visit, which is the saving grace. Depending on how deep you want to go, allow anything from 45 minutes to two hours. The woodland itself is pleasant enough for a walk, and if you know your oaks from your beeches you'll probably find it rather rewarding. Families with young children might find it a bit quiet and uneventful - there's not much in the way of playground appeal or dramatic scenery.

Worth timing your visit for late autumn or spring when the planting really shows itself. Summer can feel a touch overgrown and undermanaged in places. Winter's actually rather atmospheric if you don't mind the bare bones of the place.

If you're camped at Yellowstone or any of the other sites around Sandbach, it's a decent 20-minute potter that fills a morning without eating up half your day. Pair it with a walk around Sandbach itself - the town has some proper character - and you've got a reasonable half-day sorted.
