Sand Hill

The walk up Sand Hill from Cockermouth is proper rewarding - nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. You're looking at a modest fell that won't leave your legs screaming, which means families and older walkers actually stand a proper chance of reaching the top without turning back halfway.

What makes Sand Hill work is its proximity to Cockermouth. You're not battling crowds heading to Catbells or Great Gable - it's genuinely quiet up there. If you're camping at Whinfell Hall Farm or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, this is ideal if you want a walk that doesn't require an early start or military precision. Castlerigg Hall, a few miles further out, makes it slightly less convenient but still manageable.

Free to access, and you'll need sturdy boots rather than trainers. Go when it's dry - bog is bog, even on smaller fells. Honestly, if you're basing yourself in this corner of Cumbria and want an uncomplicated walk with decent views, Sand Hill does the job without fussing.
