Walking into Salem Chapel on Swansea's north side feels like stepping back into Victorian Wales. This is a proper Congregational chapel - all red brick and Methodist zeal - built in 1858 when nonconformist churches were thick on the ground across South Wales. The interior is what counts: original galleries, wooden pews, and that particular smell of old hymn books and beeswax that you either love or find a bit oppressive.

It's a working church still, which means you can't just wander in whenever you fancy. Sunday services run as they have for over 150 years, and that's when you'll get the real flavour of the place. The congregation is small now - Wales has changed - but that somehow makes the whole thing more affecting. You're looking at industrial-era religion frozen in amber.

History buffs and architecture types will find it worthwhile. Kids will get restless unless they're genuinely interested in Victorian nonconformism, which, fair play, some do. Allow 30 minutes if you're visiting during opening hours. It's free to attend a service, though a donation wouldn't go amiss.

From the nearby holiday parks - Riverside Holiday Park and SWDA Riverside are both within easy reach - Salem fits nicely into a wider Swansea walk exploring the city's chapel heritage. Pair it with a stroll along the marina or a visit to the Swansea Museum if you want something less pious. It's not a destination in itself, but it's worth an hour if you're already in the area.
