Cwm Clydach Walk

The Cwm Clydach Walk cuts through a proper ravine just outside Swansea, and it's one of those rare valley walks where you actually feel like you've stepped into somewhere wild. The path follows the Clydach River as it tumbles through steep wooded sides, with moss-covered rocks and the occasional waterfall if there's been decent rainfall. It's not a long trudge - most people cover the main route in under two hours - but it feels significantly more remote than its proximity to the city suggests.

Walkers will love this more than casual strollers. The terrain's uneven, muddy after rain, and there are stretches where you're genuinely clambering rather than walking. Families with older kids who don't mind getting their boots dirty will find it engaging; toddlers and the leisurely-park-bench crowd will struggle. The woodland canopy makes it feel perpetually cool and green, which is brilliant on warm days but means it can feel a bit gloomy in winter.

This works well as a half-day addition to a longer Swansea holiday. The nearby parks - SWDA Riverside and Riverside Holiday Park are both within shouting distance - make it easy to pop out for an afternoon walk without proper planning. No facilities along the route itself, so bring water and snacks. Best tackled after a dry spell when the rocks aren't slick as ice. It's the sort of walk you'll do once and either think "superb, really worthwhile" or "bit of a slog for what it is" depending on your threshold for mud.
