Saint Stephen

Saint Stephen sits on the edge of Faringdon, a proper medieval church that's managed to stay largely under the radar despite having serious historical credentials. The building itself dates back to the 14th century, though there's evidence of earlier work underneath - the sort of place where you can spend twenty minutes just tracing the development through different stone types and architectural styles if you're into that sort of thing.

Inside, the church has decent Victorian restoration work and some original features worth lingering over. The real draw is that it feels genuinely local rather than polished for visitors - you might have the place to yourself on a weekday afternoon, which is increasingly rare. It's the kind of church that rewards a slow wander rather than a tick-box visit.

This works well as a village walk destination rather than a destination in itself. Faringdon itself is worth an hour's potter around - proper market town atmosphere without being twee. If you're staying at Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Wysdom Touring Park nearby, it's an easy drive or bike ride to combine with a stroll around town and a pub lunch.

Allow thirty minutes inside unless you're doing serious architectural study. No idea about admission charges - worth ringing ahead - but most parish churches are either free or ask for a nominal donation. Early afternoon is peaceful, and weekdays beat weekends by a mile.
