Saint Drostans church

The kirk sits quietly on a slope above Fraserburgh, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Saint Drostan's is a proper old church - the sort of place where you can feel centuries pressing down on the stonework. The building itself dates back centuries, though what's visible now is largely 18th and 19th century work. Inside, it's sparse and dignified, the kind of space that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-off.

But if you like standing in quiet rooms and imagining the generations who've sat in these pews, you'll find something worth your time here.

The walk up to the church takes maybe five minutes from the nearest car parking, and there's no charge as far as I can establish - though do check locally as these details shift. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour inside if you're reading the inscriptions and taking in the details. Best visited when the light's decent, so not on a grim January afternoon.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - AC/DC is barely a mile away, or Down On The Farm just two and a half - it makes for a civilised morning outing before heading to the coast. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the short drive if you're spending time in the area. Fraserburgh's close enough for supplies and decent coffee.
