Saint Bartholomew's

Saint Bartholomew's is one of those proper medieval buildings where you can actually feel the age - the nave's got Norman features that predate most of Europe's cathedrals, and the chancel work from the 13th century still catches the light beautifully through modern stained glass.

Inside, it's spacious and bright, which surprises people expecting the gloom of an ancient church. The roof timbers are original in places, and there's enough detail in the stonework to keep history types occupied for a good half-hour without breaking a sweat. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes about right unless they're into spotting medieval carvings and brass rubbings.

It's free to wander in during daylight hours - no entry fees or donations demanded, though obviously the donation box appreciates loose change. The location means you can tie it in easily with a walk around Market Rasen's town centre, and if you're staying at Wolds View Country Park five or so miles away, this makes a convenient morning or afternoon potter before heading back to the caravan.

Worth stopping for if you're passing through? Absolutely. Worth a specific detour? Only if you're collecting medieval churches - and plenty of visitors to Lincolnshire do exactly that.
