Rush Meadow

Rush Meadow is a Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve near Bylaugh where you can actually see proper fenland habitat - not the manicured sort, but the real thing with reeds towering overhead and water reflecting the enormous Norfolk sky. It's a working nature reserve, so paths are kept clear enough but you're very much in the landscape rather than walking through it. Spring and early summer are brilliant for wildlife spotting; you'll see warblers, dragonflies, and if you're lucky, water voles slipping between the reeds. The wet woodland bit at one end is particularly good.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from this one. It's not a stroll round a manicured lake - expect proper mud, bog shoes advisable after rain, and genuine waterlogged ground that changes the paths seasonally. Allow an hour minimum if you want to do it justice, longer if you're serious about the birdwatching. There's no visitor centre or facilities on site, so come prepared. Free access, which is generous.

If you're based at Bylaugh Country Park Caravan and Campsite just four miles away, this makes an easy morning sortie without committing a whole day. The reserve works as part of a broader Norfolk wetlands exploration rather than a destination in itself - pair it with other reserves nearby if you're proper into that landscape. Honestly, if fens bore you senseless it won't suddenly click here, but for anyone who finds open water and reed beds genuinely peaceful, it's well worth the visit.
