Rumples Hill

The walk up Rumples Hill takes about forty minutes from Castle Douglas and rewards you with proper views across the Galloway hills. It's not dramatic stuff - no jagged ridges or vertiginous drops - but it's the kind of steady, satisfying climb that works brilliantly if you've got the family in tow or you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks.

What you get at the top is space. A genuine sense of having reached somewhere, without the exhaustion. The hill itself is moorland-covered, and on a clear day the vista spreads out reasonably far - you can pick out landmarks and get your bearings across the Lowlands. The path is well-trodden enough that it's not a navigational puzzle, which matters when you're with kids or unfamiliar with the area.

This works particularly well as a morning outing if you're based at Loch Ken Holiday Park or Galloway Glamping just down the road. Do it early, keep it to an hour or so on the summit, and you'll avoid the midday crowds without being precious about solitude - it genuinely doesn't attract hordes. Not a scramble, no technical bits, just a decent walk with a payoff. Worth the detour if you're exploring the Castle Douglas area properly, though don't expect anything that'll floor you with drama. It's honest work for an honest view.
