Planting Hill

The walk up Planting Hill, just outside Castle Douglas, takes about forty minutes and rewards you with proper views across the Galloway landscape. It's not dramatic - no jagged peaks or vertiginous drops - but on a clear day you can see right across to the hills beyond Loch Ken. The summit itself is modest, ringed with conifers that make it feel more like a woodland hike than a serious fell walk.

This is gentle terrain, which means it suits families with older kids and anyone after a solid afternoon walk without the commitment of a full mountain day. The path is straightforward enough, though it can get muddy in wet weather. Allow an hour and a half there and back if you're not pushing the pace. Free to visit, naturally - it's just open moorland and forestry.

Where it really works is as part of a longer Dumfries & Galloway trip. You could combine it with Loch Ken Holiday Park just down the road, using the hill as a decent morning walk before exploring Castle Douglas itself. If you're staying at Galloway Glamping or Mollance Farm, both within five miles, you've got a manageable leg-stretch that doesn't require driving halfway across Scotland. It won't set your heart racing, but that's rather the point - sometimes you just want a straightforward walk with a view, not a three-hour slog. Go when the weather's clear. Mist here just means trees.
