Brown Hill

The climb up Brown Hill might not look like much from Castle Douglas, but this modest peak delivers some of the finest views across the Solway Firth you'll find without tackling anything too demanding. At just over 400 metres, it's a proper hill walk rather than a mountain expedition, making it ideal for families with older children who fancy stretching their legs.

Expect a steady but manageable ascent through mixed woodland and open moorland. The path isn't waymarked but it's clear enough if you've got basic navigation skills. Most walkers allow two to three hours for the round trip, though you could easily spend longer at the summit if the weather's playing ball.

What makes this walk special is the panoramic vista from the top. On a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District fells, with the Solway coastline spread out below like a map. It's particularly stunning in late afternoon when the light catches the water.

Families staying at nearby spots like Three Lochs Holiday Park or Loch Ken Holiday Park will find this a cracking day out, especially if they're already exploring the Galloway Hills. The walk starts just outside Castle Douglas, so it's easily combined with a trip into town for supplies or a pub lunch afterwards.
