Rumbling Hole

The cave entrance sits at ground level beside a stream - you'll know it when the water simply vanishes into the hillside. Rumbling Hole is a proper Yorkshire sinkhole where a beck runs straight into the rock face and disappears underground with a sound that supposedly gave it its name. The cave itself doesn't go far - most visitors spend fifteen minutes peering into the darkness, listening to water echo off the stone, taking a few photos. It's free and requires no special gear.

Walkers heading through the Lune Valley between Carnforth and Lancaster tend to stumble across this rather than seek it out deliberately, which is probably the right way to experience it. The drama is in the geology, not in exploring passages - this is underground hydrology on display, not adventure caving. Kids find it interesting for about as long as it takes to work out that yes, the water really does vanish, then they're ready to move on.

Allow twenty minutes maximum, bring a torch if you fancy peering deeper, and time your visit after rain when the water flow is more pronounced. It works brilliantly as a brief stop on a longer moorland walk rather than a destination in itself.
