Rud Hill

The walk up Rud Hill rewards you with proper views across the moorlands south of Sheffield, and it's close enough to the city that you can knock it out on a half-day if the weather plays ball. It's not a technical climb - more a steady trudge through heather and rough grass - but the summit delivers the goods: wide-open country, no crowds, and on clear days you can see well beyond the immediate moorland.

This one suits walkers who want fresh air without the tourist trail. Kids will find it manageable, though there's nothing at the top to linger over, so don't expect them to be thrilled for more than twenty minutes. The real draw is the walk itself and the sense of proper wildness you get once you're up there.

You're well positioned if you're camping at Wyming Brook Farm or Fox Hagg - both within spitting distance - making it an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. The Peak District proper lies south, so slot this into a broader holiday exploring higher ground at Stanage Edge or Higger Tor if you want more dramatic terrain.

Timing-wise, allow ninety minutes up and back, longer if you want to potter about. Go early to avoid what little traffic the access paths get. Free, of course - just park sensibly and respect the moorland.
