Stone Circle

The Stone Circle sits on moorland just outside Sheffield, a modest Bronze Age arrangement that's been weathering the Pennines for several thousand years. It's not Stonehenge - don't expect dramatic trilithons or crowds. What you get instead is a genuine sense of being somewhere ancient, where someone stood and placed these stones deliberately, and the reason why remains properly mysterious.

The stones themselves are low, weathered lumps scattered across open ground. On a clear day the views across Derbyshire moorland stretch for miles, which is arguably the real draw here. Walkers will appreciate it as a straightforward out-and-back from Sheffield - it's accessible, not a slog, and rewards you with that particular satisfaction of reaching something real rather than reading about it in a guidebook.

History enthusiasts should manage expectations. There's no interpretation board, no visitor centre, no facilities. You turn up, you look at stones, you think about who put them there and why they bothered. That's rather the point.

Stay at Wyming Brook Farm Campsite just 0.3 miles away and you're ideally placed for combining this with wider Peak District exploring. North Lees Campsite, a couple of miles further out, gives you similar moorland access without the squeeze of being too close to Sheffield itself.

Best visited in dry weather when the ground isn't boggy. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're just stopping by, longer if you're taking proper time with the landscape. Free admission, naturally. It's on open moorland, so there when you want it.
