Rubha nan Sgarbh, dun site

The ruins of this Iron Age fort sit on a rocky promontory near Campbeltown, commanding views across Kilbrannan Sound. What you're looking at are the remnants of a dun - a fortified dwelling that would have housed a chieftain and his household back around 2,000 years ago. The stone walls, now tumbled and grass-grown, still give you a sense of the defensive position: high ground, water on three sides, nowhere easy to sneak up.

Historically minded visitors will find this genuinely rewarding. The site requires a bit of effort to reach and isn't signed from the main road, which keeps it quiet. You're essentially picking your way across moorland and over rocks to a place where Iron Age Argyll actually lived. That's the appeal - it feels undisturbed, not packaged.

Realistic expectations matter here. This isn't Stonehenge. You won't find reconstructions or facilities. What you get is a walk through landscape and the satisfaction of standing where a 2,000-year-old power structure literally stood. Budget an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photographs or reading up on the settlement patterns of the Kintyre peninsula.

Stay at Carradale Bay Holiday Park just down the coast - excellent spot with proper five-star reviews - and make this one of several coastal walks in the area. The Mull of Kintyre is walkable from Campbeltown too. Rubha nan Sgarbh works best as part of a wider Argyll archaeology tour, not as a destination in itself.
