Rubh' an Tighe Loisgte, dun site

The ruins of this Iron Age dun sit on a windswept promontory near Oban, commanding views across Loch Fearnoch. What remains is essentially a circular stone fort - walls collapsed but still substantial enough to make out the original structure. It's the kind of place that rewards a proper wander, picking your way through heather and figuring out where the entrance once was.

You're looking at something genuinely old here. The dun would have been a fortified residence, likely home to a clan chief or important family around 2,000 years ago. Standing where they stood, looking at the same water and hills, does something to your head - especially on a grey Argyll afternoon when the light's coming in sideways.

The walk out isn't marked, so you'll need decent shoes and a bit of navigation nous. Allow 45 minutes there and back from the car, though you could easily spend an hour poking about the site itself. Go on a clear day if you can - the views make it. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might lose interest quickly unless they're keen on clambering over stones.

It's free, naturally, and utterly unprompted by tourism infrastructure. If you're staying at Sunnybrae or Argyll Kayaker Cove nearby, this fits neatly into a morning before hitting the water or heading into Oban proper.
