Kilchattan Old Parish Church

This ruined church sits on the Isle of Tiree, not far from Oban on the mainland, and it's one of those places that rewards a bit of effort to reach. The structure itself dates back to the medieval period, though the current remains are substantially from the 17th century - you're looking at a roofless stone shell with enough character to make the trip worthwhile if you're already exploring the island.

The churchyard is what makes it special. Local gravestones tell the story of island life across centuries, and there's something genuinely moving about reading names of families who've lived and died here for generations. It's not a grand affair - no fancy carved monuments or gilded plaques - just honest stone markers worn by Atlantic weather.

Walkers will appreciate the setting more than casual visitors. You'll need to navigate to the site on foot, and the wind on Tiree can be absolutely relentless, so factor that into your visit. Allow an hour if you're actually reading the graves and taking in the atmosphere; thirty minutes if you're just having a quick look. There's no admission charge as far as I can tell, and no facilities on site.
