RSPB Leighton Moss

The moment you step onto the boardwalk at Leighton Moss, near Carnforth, you're genuinely surrounded by water and wildlife. This RSPB reserve is a proper working wetland - reed beds stretch across the landscape, and you're walking among nesting sites and feeding grounds rather than observing from a distance. Binoculars become essential within minutes.

What makes it different from your standard nature walk is the infrastructure. There are hides positioned at key vantage points where you can sit quietly and wait for bitterns, marsh harriers, and various warblers to show themselves. The boardwalk itself keeps you dry and allows access year-round, though spring and autumn migrations are when the reserve really buzzes with activity. Winter brings different birds entirely - great white egrets and occasional rarer visitors.

It's worth allowing at least two to three hours here, longer if you're serious about birdwatching. Families with older children who can manage patience will find it engaging. Younger kids might get restless unless they're already into spotting things. The entrance fee goes to conservation work, which is money well spent.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Holgates is closest at just over a mile away - this works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon activity. Pair it with a walk around Morecambe Bay or a visit to Carnforth itself, and you've got a solid day. Bring decent binoculars. Bring a bird guide. And go expecting to see nothing at all for your first twenty minutes - that's half the fun.
