RSPB Havergate Island

The walk out to Havergate Island is half the appeal, to be honest. You cross the River Ore on a proper narrow causeway with nothing but marsh and water either side, and suddenly you're surrounded by one of Suffolk's most important breeding grounds for avocets. It's genuinely gripping stuff if you care about birds - the island is closed during nesting season to protect them, but there's a viewing area from the marshes where you can get decent sightings even when the island itself is off-limits.

This is fundamentally a spot for serious birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts rather than casual tourists. Bring binoculars and a field guide, or you'll get frustrated. Spring and early summer are prime time for spotting rare waders and terns, though winter brings different species worth the trip. The RSPB manages it properly, and the access is free.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're actually going to watch and identify birds rather than just tick it off. The walk itself is straightforward but the marshland can be muddy, so proper footwear matters. It's only 4-5 miles from Woodbridge, which is a decent town for supplies and a late lunch afterwards.

If you're staying at Wantisden Park or Run Cottage Touring Park nearby, this makes a cracking morning outing before heading somewhere more family-friendly. It won't thrill small children unless they're already into wildlife, but it's exactly the kind of thing that appeals to parents wanting something quieter than the usual holiday park routine.
