RSPB Dearne Valley - Old Moor

The RSPB reserve at Old Moor sits just outside Rotherham and feels properly removed from the everyday - which is remarkable given how close you are to the town. It's a working wetland where you'll spend time watching birds from hides rather than ticking off a checklist, and that's the whole point of it.

You get two visitor centres, open year-round, with viewing platforms overlooking pools and reed beds. Bring binoculars and patience. Winter's excellent for wildfowl - thousands of them - but honestly, there's always something moving about in the reeds if you wait long enough. Spring and summer bring breeding birds and warblers; autumn's mad with migrants. The walk between hides is easy, well-maintained, and takes as long as you fancy.

Families with kids aged eight and up will find it genuinely engaging, especially if you've got a keen naturalist in tow. Younger children might lose interest after the first hide. Birdwatchers will feel at home. Photographers come back repeatedly.

Admission's free, which is generous. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're serious about it - one hour if you just want a quick look. Dress for the weather; there's bugger all shelter on the reserve itself.
