About Rowling End
The peak itself sits at around 1,250 metres and rewards walkers with uncluttered sightlines across the northern Lake District. Derwent Water spreads out below in that particular shade of grey-green that either looks moody or lovely depending on the weather, and on a clear day you're looking at the whole Helvellyn range doing its best to impress. Most people approach from the Keswick side via the bridleway network - it's accessible without being a slog, though the fellside is proper steep in places.
You'll want to allow two to three hours return if you're starting from town. Walkers fare best here rather than families with small children - the terrain's open moorland and the exposure is real enough that you need decent boots and attention to the path. This works perfectly if you're based at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or Castlerigg Hall, both within easy driving distance. Either site makes a solid camp for a week of fell walking, and Rowling End fills that gap between the obvious peaks and the gentle valley walks.
Go early or late in the day if you can. The fell clears out quickly and the light's better for photographs.
