Rowborough Down

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more atmospheric than this sprawling forest just south of Ventnor. Rowborough Down stretches across the island's southern spine, offering proper rambling territory through oak and beech canopy that filters the light into dappled patterns on the forest floor. The paths here aren't manicured - expect muddy boots and the occasional fallen branch to clamber over.

Walkers will love the network of footpaths that weave through different sections of woodland, each with its own character. Some areas feel genuinely wild, while others open into clearings where you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky. The terrain undulates enough to give your legs a workout without being punishing.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper countryside adventure will find plenty to explore, though this isn't pushchair territory by any stretch. Dog walkers have endless scope here too. Spring brings bluebells in certain pockets, while autumn turns the canopy into a cracking display of golds and russets.

From nearby holiday parks like Windmill Campersite or Grange Farm, it's an easy drive to various entry points. The Orchards Holiday Park puts you within striking distance too. Allow at least two hours if you want to do it justice - longer if you're the type to follow every interesting path that branches off the main route.
