Gun Hill

Standing at 141 metres, this properly steep climb rewards you with some of the finest views across the Solent you'll find on the island. Gun Hill sits just outside Ventnor, and the walk up through the woods is a bit of a slog - but worth every breathless step.

The summit opens up dramatically, offering sweeping vistas across the English Channel and back towards the mainland. On clear days you can spot the Needles to the west and the South Downs stretching away to the north. It's a cracking spot for photographers, particularly in the golden hour when the light catches the rolling downs.

Walkers will love the challenge - it's steep enough to get your heart pumping but not technical. Families with older children should manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the gradient. Allow an hour return from Ventnor, longer if you're stopping to admire the views.

The hill works well as part of a longer coastal walk or as a quick morning expedition if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks. Warren Hill Camp sits closest at less than a mile away, while Grange Farm Camping offers a more established base three miles out. Either way, you'll have earned your afternoon cup of tea.
