Roundwood Fort

You won't find much left standing at Roundwood Fort these days, but that's rather the point. This Iron Age hill fort sits on high ground just outside Truro, commanding views across the Cornish landscape the way its ancient inhabitants once did. What remains are earthworks and ditches - the skeletal traces of defences that would have been properly impressive two thousand years ago.

It's the sort of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual tourists. You'll need to do a bit of scrambling to work out what you're looking at, which makes it feel like actual discovery rather than a sanitised heritage experience. The views alone justify the visit, especially if you're cycling or hiking through the area.

Getting there from Truro takes about fifteen minutes by car. Carnon Downs Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is just a couple of miles away, making this an excellent add-on if you're basing yourself there. Trethem Mill, slightly further out but highly rated, also puts you within easy reach.

Allow an hour or so if you want to poke around properly and absorb the landscape. There's no visitor centre, no admission charge as far as I can tell - it's one of those lovely free Cornish antiquities you stumble upon. Go on a clear day when the vistas stretch properly. Wet weather turns it muddy and rather grim.
