Bissoe Valley Nature Reserve

The Bissoe Valley, just outside Truro, is a proper working landscape rather than a manicured nature reserve. What you're walking through here is a reclaimed industrial valley - tin and copper mining heritage transformed into something genuinely wild. The valley floor runs with a stream, and the paths wind past old mine workings softened by decades of regrowth. It's atmospheric in a way that feels earned rather than packaged.

This is ideal territory for walkers who want something with actual substance. The routes take you through woodland and open ground, with enough elevation change to keep things interesting without being punishing. Birdwatchers will find plenty to keep them occupied - herons, buzzards, the usual suspects. History types get the industrial archaeology angle, which is genuinely intriguing if you care about Cornwall's mining past. Kids will cope for an hour or so, particularly if you make a game of spotting the old mine structures.

Access appears to be free, which is refreshing. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a decent loop, less if you're just poking about for an hour. The valley can get muddy, so proper footwear matters.

If you're staying at Carnon Downs Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or any of the other parks dotting the area - Tresyjo, Trevarth, or Lanyon - you're well-positioned. It's close enough for a morning or afternoon walk without eating into travel time. Not a showstopper on its own, but a solid addition to a Truro-based break.
