Round Hill tumulus

There's not much left to see, to be honest. Round Hill is a Bronze Age tumulus - basically a burial mound - that sits on the edge of Clitheroe, and unless you know what you're looking at, it's easy to walk straight past. From a distance it looks like just another grassy bump in the Ribble Valley landscape.

But that's rather the point. This is archaeology in its purest form: no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, no café. Just an ancient mound that's been here for roughly 4,000 years. Proper history. If you're into Bronze Age burial practices or local prehistory, it's worth the short detour from Clitheroe town centre. Everyone else might find ten minutes more than enough.

The site is free and accessible year-round, though there's nothing formal about it - no paths, no facilities, just grass. It works best as part of a larger walk around Clitheroe itself, perhaps combining it with a visit to the castle. The Ribble Valley has decent walking country, and staying at one of the nearby parks like Holgates or Thornton Hall puts you well-positioned for exploring the wider area without the site being a main event.

Timing-wise, allow fifteen minutes maximum. Go when the light's good - early morning or late afternoon makes the mound's shape more obvious. Kids will likely lose interest quickly unless they're genuinely fascinated by archaeology. Most visitors use it as a brief stop rather than a destination in itself.
