Roughbeech Wood

The thing that strikes you first about Roughbeech Wood is how proper quiet it is. Just south of Lingfield in Sussex, this isn't some manicured country estate - it's a genuine working woodland where you can actually hear yourself think. The tracks wind through beech and oak, with enough variety in the terrain to keep legs busy without being punishing. You'll find the canopy dense enough to feel properly sheltered even when it's drizzle outside, which is half the point of Sussex in winter.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a ticketed attraction with facilities and a gift shop - just woods, paths, and what feels like the absence of anything requiring your phone. Allow two to three hours for a decent loop if you're not rushing. Families with older kids who can manage uneven ground will do fine; toddlers in buggies would struggle on some sections. The woodland changes through seasons, but autumn when the beech turn is genuinely worth timing your visit around.

It pairs well with a stay at Worth Forest Glamping just down the road - about six miles away. That's close enough for a morning walk without feeling tacked on to your holiday.
