Rough Hill

The walk up Rough Hill doesn't announce itself. You climb from the outskirts of Rossendale through bracken and moorland, and suddenly the landscape opens out properly - views across Lancashire's industrial valleys give way to proper moorland vistas once you've gained enough height. It's a modest peak by Pennine standards, but that's exactly why it works. No cable cars, no visitor centre, no crowds fighting for the same Instagram angle.

This is walker terrain. The ascent takes a solid hour from the town, and you'll want proper boots - the ground gets boggy in patches, especially after rain. On a clear day you can see across to Winter Hill and beyond. Families with young legs will manage it fine, though toddlers might find the final push tedious. History types won't find much here except the landscape itself, which has been worked and walked for centuries.

Go when the weather's settled - moorland fog turns this into an exercise in faith rather than sightseeing. Early autumn works well, when the bracken's golden and the midges have mostly cleared off. Allow a good two hours there and back from Rossendale town centre.
