Rough Haw

Getting to Rough Haw involves a proper walk, which is exactly the point. This modest peak sits above Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales, offering the kind of views that don't require a three-hour slog or specialist kit. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic rocky outcrops or cairns - but the vantage point across the Dales is genuinely excellent, especially if you time it right and the light's cooperating.

The climb from the lower slopes takes about forty minutes at a steady pace. It's not steep enough to punish you, but steep enough to feel like you've earned the vista when you get there. Walkers will find this a rewarding half-day outing, particularly those who want something less crowded than Pendle Hill or the honeypot spots around Malham. Families with reasonably fit kids aged 10+ will manage it fine; much younger and you're looking at a fair bit of carrying.

Best to go in the morning when the light's behind you and you can actually see across the valleys. Late afternoon works too if you're chasing that golden hour glow. There's no charge and no facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat. Allow two to three hours for a leisurely round trip.

Staying at one of the local campsites - Coxons Farm Glamping Pods is closest at under three miles - makes this a natural addition to a Dales holiday. It's the kind of walk that fits nicely between bigger days at Bolton Abbey or Malham, without feeling like filler.
