Rosthwaite Cam

The walk up Rosthwaite Cam rewards you with a proper fell experience without the slog of the bigger peaks nearby. From Keswick, it's the sort of outing that fits perfectly into a long afternoon - steep in places, but nothing that'll have you regretting your trainers by halfway up.

The summit sits at around 957 metres and the views across the Lake District are genuinely worth the effort. You're looking out towards Catbells and across to the Grasmere fells, and on a clear day the perspective is brilliant. The fell itself is moorland and rough grassland, so it feels properly wild without being technical climbing.

Walkers will get the most out of this one, particularly those basing themselves at Great Langdale Campsite or one of the glamping spots around there - it's only about an hour's walk from the car park at Rosthwaite itself. Families with confident hillwalkers aged ten and up could manage it fine. Allow three to four hours for a relaxed round trip, though it's easily done quicker.

The thing is, Rosthwaite Cam doesn't get the crowds that Catbells pulls in, even though it's equally good. If you're staying at BaysBrown Farm Campsite and want a morning walk that gets you properly into the fells without needing a full day, this delivers. Go early for the light on the eastern fells.
