Roman Reservoir

Two thousand years on and you can still make out the earthwork banks where Romans dammed a stream to create their water supply. It's not dramatic - no grand ruins or standing stones - but that's rather the point. What you're looking at is functional archaeology, the kind of thing that kept a garrison going when Lincoln was Lindum Colonia.

The site sits just outside Lincoln itself, and the walk around the reservoir is straightforward enough. You'll see the raised banks that once held back the water, and there's something genuinely affecting about standing where Roman engineers once worked out their hydraulics without computers or surveying equipment. The scale isn't huge, which means you won't spend hours here, but it's worth an hour's poking about if you're already in the area.

History enthusiasts will get the most from this one. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already keen on how ancient things worked. It's free to visit and there's no formal opening hours issue since it's essentially a landscape feature you can access on foot.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Hartsholme Country Park or Langdale Lakes are both within striking distance - this pairs nicely with Lincoln's cathedral and Roman pottery workshops rather than as a standalone trip. The town itself has far more substantial Roman remains, so treat this as the archaeological cherry on top of a Lincoln visit, not the main draw.
