Greetwell Quarry

The old limestone workings at Greetwell, just outside Lincoln, have quietly become one of the area's best spots for spotting birds and butterflies. What was once industrial extraction is now a proper nature reserve, with quarry pools and grassland that attract species you won't see in many other parts of Lincolnshire.

You're looking at a couple of hours here, maximum - it's not vast, but the walking is straightforward and the paths are well maintained. Birdwatchers will be in their element, especially during migration seasons when warblers and visiting raptors turn up. The quarry pools themselves are good for spotting great crested grebes and various ducks, depending on the season. Photographers do well here too, though you'll need patience and decent binoculars to make the most of it.

Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might find it a bit quiet and lengthy for their liking - there's no playground or attractions beyond the wildlife itself. It's the sort of place where you're there for the natural history, not entertainment.

The reserve is free to access, though exact opening times are worth checking locally in Lincoln before you head out. It pairs nicely with a caravan holiday at Langdale Lakes or Seven Acre Farm, both within easy driving distance. If you're staying at either site and want a low-key morning exploring something genuinely interesting rather than another managed attraction, this deserves your time.
