Roman Camp Caravan Park

The Roman Camp is less a dramatic archaeological site and more a peaceful strip of Norfolk woodland that happens to sit atop old Roman fortifications. Walking through here on a quiet afternoon, you get a sense of layered history - the remains are subtle, mostly earth banks and ditches now, but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place where you can actually think, rather than shuffle through crowds reading interpretation boards.

This works best for walkers and history enthusiasts who don't need everything signed and explained. Kids under ten might lose interest quickly unless you're prepared to make up stories about legions and centurions. The reserve itself is fairly compact - an hour's walk covers the main ground comfortably. Cromer is just down the road, which means you can combine this with a coastal day without much faffing about.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - West Runton is barely half a mile away, or Manor Farm just under a mile - this makes a decent morning outing before heading to the beach or into town for lunch. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are sensible rather than optional. Free to wander, which is refreshing when so much Norfolk charges for everything. It's not spectacular, but it's genuine. You won't queue, you probably won't see many others, and you'll leave feeling like you've actually touched something old rather than consumed a tourist experience.
