National Trust - West Runton & Beeston Regis Heath

The heath stretches for miles along the Norfolk coast between West Runton and Beeston Regis, and it's one of those places that rewards you for getting off the main drag. You're walking through lowland heathland here - gorse, heather, and scattered pines creating that particular East Anglian landscape that feels properly wild despite being just outside Cromer.

What makes it worth your time is the sheer space. After the seaside crowds, you get genuine quiet and room to breathe. The terrain varies enough to keep things interesting: open heath gives way to scrubby woodland, and on clearer days you've got decent views toward the coast. It's excellent for walkers who want a proper ramble without the drama of cliff paths or moorland climbs. Kids will have the run of the place, though there's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre or facilities that I could find.

The National Trust manages this land because it's genuinely rare habitat now. Lowland heath has nearly vanished from Britain, which makes protecting what's left rather important, even if it doesn't look as dramatic as some Trust properties.

If you're based at any of the local caravan parks - West Runton Camping is practically on the doorstep, and Manor Farm and Woodhill are equally close - this is an obvious morning or afternoon outing. Bring proper walking boots; it can be boggy after rain. Free to wander, no time limits. Combine it with Cromer's seafront if you want the full Norfolk hit.
