Roman Building

The Roman Building near Aylesford is one of those archaeological sites that rewards a bit of effort to track down. What you're looking at are the remains of a substantial Romano-British structure, dating back roughly two thousand years - foundations, wall lines, and the ghostly outline of what was once someone's home or workplace. It's not dramatic in the Instagram sense. There are no soaring arches or intact mosaics. But if you're into reading landscapes and imagining what stood here when the Romans were still in Britain, it's genuinely absorbing.

History enthusiasts will find this far more rewarding than casual visitors. You need to do a bit of detective work to understand what you're seeing, which means bringing a guide or doing your homework beforehand. Kids under ten will probably get bored within ten minutes - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards to grab their attention. Walkers, though, often stumble across it as part of exploring the Medway Valley.

Stay nearby at Kits Coty Glamping, just over a mile away, or any of the other caravan parks dotted around Bearsted and the wider area - Badgells Wood Camping and Oak View Holiday Park are within easy driving distance. The landscape here is gentle Kentish countryside, worth exploring on foot rather than treating this as a tick-box stop. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested; thirty minutes if you're just passing through. Best visited on a quiet weekday when you can actually think.
