Roecliffe Hill

The walk up Roecliffe Hill takes you through proper Leicestershire countryside, the kind of place where you'll see more sheep than cars. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch - this is the Midlands, after all - but the views back towards Leicester reward the short climb, especially if you time it right on a clear day.

The hill itself rises from farmland just outside the city, and the approach is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might lose interest before the top. Count on twenty minutes each way if you're not hurrying. The summit gives you a sense of perspective over the rolling terrain, and on good days you can pick out landmarks across the region.

There's nothing here in the way of facilities - no café, no visitor centre - so bring water and come prepared for proper walking boots if the ground's wet. It's the sort of place you do on a whim when you've got an hour to spare, not something you plan a whole day around.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Proctors Park or High Meadows Farm are both within five miles - Roecliffe Hill works as a decent leg-stretch before heading back to base. It won't rival Charnwood Forest for views, but it's considerably less crowded and much easier underfoot. Worth adding to a broader walk through the area rather than visiting solo.
