The Outwoods sit just outside Leicester, a proper woodland patch that feels genuinely separate from the city sprawl. It's ancient common land - about 84 acres of it - where locals have had grazing and timber rights for centuries. These days it's just a nice walk through mixed woodland with open glades, a couple of ponds, and enough rough paths to feel like actual countryside rather than a municipal park.

Walkers will get the most from it. This isn't a manicured attraction with interpretation boards and café stops - it's more about putting on decent boots and wandering through trees. The woodland changes seasonably, so spring brings bluebells, autumn gives proper colour. There's a decent network of informal routes through the site, though nothing marked with the kind of signposting you'd find on Bradgate Park, just 4 miles south. Kids might manage 45 minutes to an hour before they get restless, depending on age and mud tolerance.

It costs nothing and there are no official opening hours - you just turn up. The nearest proper base would be one of the caravan parks clustered around the area: Proctors Park is closest at 3.6 miles, or if you want something with more facilities, Charnwood Acres is about 5.5 miles away. Outwoods works as a half-morning stop between bigger attractions rather than a full day's focus, but if you're the sort who enjoys a quiet woodland wander without the crowds, it's well worth the short drive from Leicester.
