Beacon Hill

The walk up Beacon Hill is properly rewarding - a short, manageable climb that gives you proper views across Leicestershire once you're up there. It's the sort of peak that doesn't take all day but leaves you feeling like you've actually achieved something, especially if you've got kids in tow.

The hill itself sits just outside Leicester and makes a decent half-day outing. You get grassland, some woodland sections, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough to make the effort worthwhile. It's not a slog - most people manage it in under an hour - though the path can get a bit muddy after rain. The summit isn't dramatic, but that's almost the point. It's honest terrain.

Families with primary-age kids will get the most from this. Teenagers might find it a touch tame unless they're genuinely into walking. The real draw is combining it with Bradgate Park just down the road, which has proper facilities, a deer herd, and ruins if you want more substantial attractions. You could easily spend a full day moving between the two.

It's free to access - no gates or fees to worry about. Go early on weekends to avoid the crowds, especially in summer. The ground can be boggy in winter, so better in drier months. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Charnwood Acres is closest at under five miles - you've got a genuine local walk without needing to drive far.
