Roe Wood

The woodland around Roe Wood, just outside Southwell, is proper Nottinghamshire - quiet, understated, and easy to miss if you're not looking. It's a modest forest walk rather than a destination in its own right, the kind of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. You'll find yourself among mature trees, decent paths, and the occasional burst of birdsong that makes you remember why you bothered to leave the car park.

This works best for walkers who want an easy hour or two without any fuss. There's no visitor centre, no café, no signposted trails with names like "The Enchanted Loop" - it's just woodland. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, unless you're the type who likes collecting sticks and naming trees. If you're staying at Southwell Retreat or one of the glamping sites nearby, it's a convenient leg-stretcher. The real attractions - Sherwood Forest and Center Parcs - are close enough to make this a secondary option rather than a reason to visit.

Access appears unrestricted, and there's no entry fee that we can find. Go early morning or mid-week if you want it to yourself. It's the sort of walk that sneaks up on you - you'll feel better for having done it, even if you can't quite remember what made it special.
