The Roman fort at Caistor sits on high ground just south of Market Rasen, and what strikes you first is how commanding the position still feels, nearly two millennia on. This isn't a reconstructed showpiece - you're looking at earthworks, the stubborn remains of a military installation that once anchored the northern frontier of Roman Britain. The ditches are still visible, which is more than you'd expect from something this old.

You can walk the perimeter reasonably quickly, maybe forty minutes if you're not rushing, though history buffs will want longer to sit with what they're seeing. The views across the Lincolnshire Wolds from up here are genuinely good - the high point makes sense strategically and geographically. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be a nuisance.

This works best for walkers and anyone with a genuine interest in Roman archaeology. Kids under ten will probably get restless after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on the period. The nearby Wolds View Country Park is less than a mile away, which makes this an easy pairing if you're staying at either of the local caravan sites - Station Farm just three miles off is particularly well-reviewed. The advantage of basing yourself here is that you can combine this with a proper walk across the Wolds themselves without feeling like you've driven miles for a half-hour attraction.

Bringing binoculars isn't essential but worth considering if you're interested in the landscape beyond the fort itself.
