ROC Nuclear fallout shelter (site of)

Cold War paranoia left its mark across Britain, and this former Regional Operations Centre bunker near Cheddar represents one of the more sobering chapters. Built to house government officials in the event of nuclear attack, the facility was designed to coordinate emergency response across the South West from deep underground. What remains today is essentially the site where this concrete fortress once stood - the actual bunker structures have largely been demolished or sealed. You'll find little more than earthworks and perhaps some concrete remnants, making this more of interest to military history enthusiasts than casual visitors. Families expecting dramatic underground tours will be disappointed. The location itself offers decent countryside views across the Somerset Levels, but you'd get better value from nearby Cheddar Gorge for your day out. Those staying at Bucklegrove Holiday Park or any of the other sites around Cheddar village might find it worth a brief detour if they're particularly keen on Cold War history. Allow no more than 30 minutes unless you're researching or have a specific interest in nuclear bunkers. The site works better as part of a wider exploration of the area's wartime heritage rather than a standalone attraction.
