Broadway Hill

Standing 308 metres above the Somerset Levels, this grassy summit delivers proper views across the Mendip Hills without the crowds that swarm nearby Cheddar Gorge. The walk up from Cheddar takes about 45 minutes through typical Mendip countryside - stone walls, sheep fields, and the odd buzzard circling overhead.

Families with reasonably fit kids will manage the climb, though it's a steady uphill slog that might test shorter legs. The payoff comes at the top where you can see across to Glastonbury Tor on clear days, with the Bristol Channel gleaming in the distance. No facilities up here, just grass, wind, and views.

Walkers seeking a decent half-day ramble often combine Broadway Hill with nearby Black Down for a proper Mendip ridge walk. The summit itself won't detain you long - twenty minutes to catch your breath and take photos should do it.

For those staying at one of the holiday parks around Cheddar like Wells Touring Park or Cheddar Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's a straightforward drive to the base of the walk. Come early morning or late afternoon when the light's at its best and you'll have the hill largely to yourself. Worth the effort if you fancy earning your views rather than driving to them.
