ROC Nuclear Bunker

You're standing on the moors above Hexham, staring at what looks like an ordinary grass-covered hill. Then it hits you - this is the Cold War, buried underground. The ROC Nuclear Bunker is exactly what it sounds: a Royal Observer Corps post from the height of atomic anxiety, preserved as a time capsule from the 1960s.

Inside, it's properly eerie. The operations room is frozen in 1991, complete with the equipment observers would have used to detect and report a nuclear attack. You can see where staff would have sat for hours, plotting aircraft movements and waiting for a threat that, thankfully, never came. The cramped quarters and vintage technology make the existential dread of the era feel very real indeed.

It's the kind of place that appeals to history buffs and anyone interested in Cold War Britain, though families with older kids (12+) tend to find it gripping rather than dry. Younger children might lose interest after 45 minutes or so. Allow about two hours to properly explore everything without rushing.

The bunker sits perfectly within a caravan park break around these parts. Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park is less than two miles away, making it an easy detour between walking the Pennines or visiting other attractions nearby. Village Green Holiday Park, five and a half miles south, works well if you're basing yourself in the wider Hexham area.

Access to the bunker varies seasonally, so it's worth checking ahead before you make the trip out to these remote moors.
